Let’s do our part and help laid off employees get back on their feet

Due to a rise in E-commerce sales and the changing face of retail, it comes as no surprise to professionals in the business that Best Buy Canada has closed down 7 of it’s Future Shop locations and 8 Best Buys. Six of these have taken place in the province of British Columbia and it HAS come as a surprise to over 350 workers in BC and 900 employees overall, as they were laid off without any notice beforehand.

As one former employee is quoted saying, “It has a lot to do with their entire business model […] They could care less about moving product and more about the unnecessary add-ons. As people become more savvy, they turn away from these extras and that is really what bit into their bottom line.”

With an increase in customer “showrooming” where people come in to check out the merchandise in store and then buy the products online, it’s obvious that Best Buy Canada is looking to the future, and the future doesn’t include big box stores anymore.

Business experts claim there is nothing for the laid off employees to worry about, stating that the arrival of new retailers such as Target and Walmart, will once again offer them the opportunity of steady employment. However, former employees may not be so easily swooned by this attempt at consolation seeing as other large retailers are struggling to stay afloat in a rising online shopping world. Major sellers like Sears, have recently also laid off hundreds of employees because they simply cannot afford to keep them anymore. Some say Target’s move north is a positive change, but those that have been left without jobs disagree. Only time will tell whether or not the retail business can be saved, in the meantime, hundreds of people are now back in the hunt for a new job.
