What is Responsive Web Design?

Day by day, the number of devices, platforms, and browsers that need to work with your site grows, and along with it, the web’s constant redefinition. Responsive Web Design (RWD) is a specific approach to website design in which a site is crafted to provide easy reading and navigation with a minimum amount of resizing and scrolling—across an increasingly diverse range of devices, including mobile websites. It is a major trend, gaining popularity for the easy navigation it provides to viewers by creating flexible and adaptive websites. Instead of responding to a desktop format, responsive web design approaches the issue the other way around – creating dynamic, flexible and grid-based layouts that adapt to almost any screen, from a screen that fit in a hand to screens that fill a wall.

Responsive Web Design has three core principles: flexible grids (percentage based fluid columns of content), media queries (a tool that changes CSS based on the browser’s current scale) and flexible media (content such are images and video scale with the dimensions of the browser). RWD thinks beyond the desktop and anticipates and responds to the needs of the user of today and in the future.
